The Little White Rocker from The Little Brown House on 62
Mid-July was the time to clean out the attic at Mom and Dad's house. We had arranged for a dumpster to be in the drive for that week, and all of the kids were going to be there to help.
Earlier Gary had put the ladder up to one of the holes in the ceiling of the garage, just to check and see what was there. He discovered no floor, just beams, and a lot of stuff to bring down and sort through. He knew that the project was too big for just him and me, so the week that Blaine and Matt were there was perfect. Dad had left a map of the attic on which he had sketched items and labeled them, plus he left a list of things that were there as well. This was a 'typical Dad' type of thing because Dad was extremely organized, kept lists, stored receipts and copies of letters in folders that he had alphabetized in desk drawers. So finding a sketch of the attic and a list of contents was no real surprise.
One of the items that came down the ladder when Blaine and Matt were reaching and pulling as much as they could reach was a children's size white upholstered rocker.
Both Greta and I squealed in delight "THE LITTLE WHITE ROCKER FROM THE LITTLE BROWN HOUSE ON 62!" which resulted in many mimics of our outbursts.
Greta and I looked at each other and knew that this rocker needed to come home with me and be re-furbished for Lynnlee! What a great gift this will be for that little girl!
I checked on FB for recommendations for re-upholstering, and most of the responses indicated huge expense involved. Nothing was very speedy either, but that wasn't an issue since Lynnlee wouldn't be born until October and she won't be ready for sitting in the rocker for several months. I was thinking maybe a gift for her first birthday or her second Christmas? As I was telling my good friend Kathy about it one evening over dinner, she said that she has tackled upholstery projects with great success and would be willing to offer assistance for this one. Great news!
Then I found it!
Lo and behold when I was looking through photo albums, I found this picture of me and my doll, sitting in the Little White Rocker and we were at the Little Brown House on 62. Perfect!
Some day I will share the story of the Little White Rocker from the Little Brown House on 62 with Lynnlee. I hope this chair becomes a treasured heirloom that she can pass on to future generations.
