Latest Reading Adventures
I haven't read much lately, especially since we were staying with the Yaggie kids and most of the books I had on Overdrive expired and had to be deleted.
However, I did add a few titles to my Nook from Overdrive to start my reading journey once again. Then wouldn't you know it.....I received two emails that two of the books I had on hold were available. So I downloaded them quickly and have been working on them.
Of course it is easier to read when one has time and energy to devote to it. The past few days have given me the perfect opportunity to use reading as an excuse for how I spend my time. I picked up a head cold in the past week and it hit me hard on Thursday evening. I decided, at Gary's suggestion, to just stay on the couch downstairs on Saturday, cover up with my cozy snowman blanket, and read and nap all day.
That worked! I had started The Hate You Give by Angie Thomas a few days ago and was able to hit it hard and finish it. I mentioned to Gary and to Amanda today that when I start a book, my interest needs to be caught in that first chapter, sometimes even on the first page, and if it is, I am good for finishing the book in record time. This was one of those books.
I first heard about the novel on the Whatcha Reading? FB page that Alicia Abney started a year or so ago. It has been fun to read through suggestions and reviews from others. I have invited several of my FB friends to join the group and I love seeing their comments too. It is kinda like all of my friends finally meeting each other when I see Beth Z from Massachusetts respond to something that Megan posted.
After I finished that book, I started A Man Called Ove. This too had been recommended, but I had picked it up several times and just had never bought it. I was on the waiting list for it, and it came in while I was reading The Hate U Give. The style is very different from the previous book, but I like it. I posted in the forum that I was reading this one now, and the comments wee varied. Rae Jeanne said she didn't really like it, for she found it depressing. Another lady, Beth from Massachusetts sister I think, said she read it quickly and really enjoyed it. Kathy from Charleston (a DWLZ friend) said she liked it and added that Ove reminded her of her father. I am enjoying it, mainly because I like to figure out what he is talking about and I have so far---his wife is dead (which I had pieced together before he visited her at the cemetery) and he is plotting to hang himself (which was my first thought when he described the hook he needed and where he was going to place it, plus he had cancelled his phone line and his newspaper so all the pieces fit together). But I like how he calls people by some identifying physical quality because he (1) doesn't know their names and (2) has no intention of knowing the well enough to care about their names. I think I will enjoy this book too!
So now on this snowy afternoon after Landon's morning wrestling meet at West Lafayette High School, I will change my clothes, get cozy under my snowman blanket, and hit the Nook for a good Sunday afternoon reading session.
Love these cold snowy winter afternoons.
